The Mets and Dodgers have the two best records in the National League and they will square off again tonight. Last night, Los Angeles held New York scoreless as Tony Gonsolin did his thing and picked up his sixth win of the season. The Dodgers won 2-0 and tonight’s matchup could be another classic pitching duel. The Mets Chris Bassitt takes on the Dodgers Tyler Anderson.
Like Gonsolin, Anderson is a perfect 6-0. The Dodgers left-hander has won each of his last three starts. In those three games, Anderson has pitched 21 innings, given up just two earned runs, and struck out 21 batters. Anderson’s ERA for the season is 2.90 and, with an xERA of 3.27, his numbers don’t lie. This will be Anderson’s first start against the Mets.
Bassitt has been solid for New York. He is 4-2 with a 3.66 ERA so far this season. In his last start, he went six innings and allowed just one earned run as the Mets beat Philadelphia. That performance was much better than his previous start against San Francisco. It was Bassitt’s worst of the season. He lasted just 4.1 innings and gave up a monstrous eight earned runs. None of his numbers are eye-opening, but Bassitt has been a solid pitcher for the Mets so far this season.
Both pitchers will have to contend with very strong hitting lineups. Both the Mets and Dodgers are top-5 teams in most offensive statistical categories. The two teams are No. 1 and 2 in terms of runs per game. The Dodgers lead the majors averaging 5.41 runs a game while the Mets are second at 5.11. L.A.’s Mookie Betts is second in the majors in home runs with 16. Former NL Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso is second in MLB in RBIs with 47. Trea Turner, who has a 25-game hitting streak, ranks fifth in the majors in RBIs with 41. Both lineups are littered with big-time hitters which will make it difficult for both pitchers.
With last night’s win, the Dodgers are now 14-5 SU in their last 19 games. The win also broke a three-game losing streak. The Dodgers had been swept at home by the Pirates. The loss for the Mets was their first in seven games. New York swept Philadelphia and Washington in consecutive series. The Mets took three games from the Nationals by a combined score of 28-5. They won the last two games of the series 10-0 and 5-0.
With their offense in high gear, the Mets’ game totals have gone Over in eight of their last ten games. The Under has been the trend for the Dodgers lately with five of their last seven games resulting in the Under. In the last five games between the Mets and Dodgers, the Under is 4-1. The Dodgers are 6-1 SU in their last seven games against the Mets at home.
