Miscellaneous Thoughts/Handicapping:
- Chicago right-hander Edwin Jackson has really struggled on the road recently where he has allowed nine runs in his last fourteen innings pitched. Overall, Jackson is 2-4 with a pedestrian 4.17 ERA and 1.28 WHIP away from home in 2013, and now faces a Milwaukee lineup that boasts a .745 OPS over the last two weeks;
- Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse takes the mound in excellent form with a 1.35 ERA and 0.95 WHIP over his last three starts, including allowing just 15 hits in 20 innings of work. Lohse has a favorable matchup against a Chicago offense that is batting .222 with a .271 on base percentage on the road (3.2 runs per game) and .208 with a .266 on base percentage versus division opponents (2.8 runs per game);
- Seattle southpaw Joe Saunders is 4-2 with a 2.53 ERA and 1.07 WHIP at Safeco Field this season and boasts an impressive 2.95 ERA over the last month. The consummate soft-tosser takes the mound in excellent form with a 2.11 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over his last three starts, including allowing just two runs in his last 15 frames. Let’s also note that Saunders is 3-0 with a career 3.15 ERA and 1.10 WHIP versus the Pirates (3 ER in last 14 IP);
- Minnesota starter Kevin Correia has quietly put together a 3.65 ERA in June, together with a 22/3 K/BB ratio. Correia also finds himself in good form as evidenced by his 3.00 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over the last three starts, including a 19/1 K/BB ratio in 18 innings of work. The fact that Correia owns a 3.00 over his last three outings is even more impressive in light of his 35% hit rate, which is unsustainable and will decline in the near future (thereby producing even better peripheral statistics).
