Igor Shesterkin’s return to the ice for Monday’s practice around midday was great news for the New York Rangers. Shesterkin’s mild discomfort is still present, but it appears to be a sign that he could start for the Rangers tonight against the Detroit Red Wings.

Louis Dominigue was called up to the team in place of Shesterkin for the Rangers’ 5-4 shootout loss at Minnesota on Saturday

Jimmy Vesey, Artemi Panarin, and Erik Gustafsson all scored for the Rangers within a 3:17 span, but New York backup goalie Jonathan Quick gave up four goals in a row. Chris Kreider’s eighth goal of the game in the third period gave the Rangers a chance to win the point by forcing overtime.

New York’s six-game winning streak had put them atop the Metropolitan Division. That streak came to an end when they blew the early lead against Minnesota. Plus, the winning streak’s final game, a 2-1 victory over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes, proved costly due to injuries to defensemen Adam Fox and Filip Chytil.

Chytil was hurt in a collision with Jesper Fast, and Fox was hurt in a collision with Sebastian Aho. Fox will miss at least ten games. Chytil will miss at least a week. Connor Mackey will take Chytil’s place and Jonny Brodzinski will replace Fox.

After suffering seven consecutive losing seasons, Detroit is off to a great start this season. The Red Wings won five of their first six games this year. Last season, Detroit also got off to a hot start, going 7-3-2. But, they ended up dropping 13 of their next 19 games.

Detroit is 2-3-1 in its last six games. Their two victories in that span featured significant comebacks. On October 30, the Red Wings defeated the New York Islanders in overtime thanks to three goals in the third period. On Saturday night, they defeated the Boston Bruins 5–4 at home with another three-goal performance in the third period.

The Red Wings scored three goals in 3:48 against the Islanders, and it took them 3:44 on Saturday to score three against Boston. Against the Bruins, Dylan Larkin scored the equalizer and David Perron added two assists and scored the game-winning goal.

Thanks to their two big comeback wins, the Red Wings have scored an NHL-high 20 goals in the third period. The Rangers have allowed just six third-period goals this season. New York has also won six of its last seven games and is in first place in the Metropolitan Division at 8-2-1. Detroit is 7-4-1 and is currently second behind Boston in the Atlantic Division.

Detroit is 3-6 SU in its last nine games against the Rangers. Tonight’s total is 6, which reflects a strong Rangers defense. New York ranks second in shots allowed (26.2) and goals allowed (1.9) this season. The Under has cashed in seven of the Rangers’ last nine games.
