Game: New York Jets @ Cleveland Browns
Time: 8:00 p.m.
Odds: Jets -2, Browns +2
Total: 33.5
The New York Jets are 6-0-1 SU and 6-1 ATS in their last seven preseason games, including a 3-0 SU and ATS run last year. The Jets will attempt to start their 2023 preseason with a victory tonight in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, against the Cleveland Browns.
As a preseason underdog, New York is 3-0 SU and ATS in its last three games. After going 13-2 SU and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 preseason games, the Browns struggled in 2022, going just 1-2 SU and 1-1-1 ATS. Each of the Jets’ last five preseason games has gone Over the total, while the Over is 3-0 in the Browns last three.
Last season, the Jets had a promising 7-4 SU and ATS start in the regular season before going on a 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS to finish. Prior to Breece Hall’s injury, New York had a top-five defense and an excellent ground game, but their potential was severely constrained by the poor quarterback play of Zach Wilson and Mike White.
Quarterback play shouldn’t be a problem this year. Aaron Rodgers takes over for the Jets. In order to acquire the seasoned quarterback, the Jets made one of the biggest moves of the offseason by dealing a number of draft picks to the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers won’t play tonight, but he’ll be the focus for the Jets as the regular season approaches.
When the Browns went 11-5 SU in 2020 and won their first playoff game since 1994, it seemed like they were on the right track. However, they went right back to the same old Browns, missing the playoffs in 2021 with an 8-9 SU record. Then, they were even worse in 2022 with a 7-10 SU and 8-9 ATS record. After sitting out the first 11 games of the season due to a suspension, Deshaun Watson played the final six games of the season.
Running back Nick Chubb had a great season last year with 1,525 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Even though neither player will take the field tonight, it will be interesting to see how Watson and Chubb perform over the course of a full season in 2023.
Wilson is said to have made some significant advancements in his development over the offseason. He is scheduled to start in the Hall of Fame Game, and even though he is unlikely to play more than one or two drives, he could still make a difference. At wide receiver, New York has a lot of depth, including undrafted wideout Jason Brownlee, who has excelled in camp.
QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson was selected by the Browns in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Thompson-Robinson is set to play a lot tonight against the Jets, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski. The fact that Thompson-Robinson is coming off of a very successful career after graduating from UCLA is good news for Browns supporters. Thompson-Robinson had 3,154 passing yards, 27 passing touchdowns, and 646 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns in his final season with the Bruins.
