Friday’s NFL preseason game between the Carolina Panthers and the New York Giants will take place at MetLife Stadium. Both teams played in Week 1 and lost. The Giants lost to the Lions by five points (21-16), while the Panthers suffered a humiliating loss to the Jets, getting blanked 27-0.

Last year, the Panthers had a very underwhelming season, finishing second in the NFC South with an overall record of 7-10. Then-head coach Matt Rhule was fired before the midpoint of the season. Carolina improved as the year went on (4-2 in the final six games), but the team still failed to make the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year.

Against the Jets in Week 1 of the preseason, Carolina welcomed the Bryce Young era. The No. 1 overall draft pick this year was underwhelming in his first performance as a Panther. Young finished 4-of-6 for 21 yards and was sacked once.

Carolina trailed 13-0 at the half. The Panthers gave up 14 more points in the second half, losing 27-0. Spencer Brown led the team in rushing with 34 yards on eight carries, while quarterback Matt Corral finished with 126 passing yards and a pick. Carolina’s offense was outgained 333 to 165, and it only managed 10 first downs.

The Giants, on the other hand, are hoping to make the playoffs again after going 9-7-1 and finishing third in the NFC East in 2022. With that effort, the Giants secured a spot in the wild-card round of the postseason. It was also the Giants’ first winning record since 2016. In the wild-card game, New York defeated the Vikings 31–24, but then lost in the divisional playoffs to the Eagles 38–7.

In their first preseason game of the year, New York led the Detroit Lions 13-3 at the half. However, the Giants were defeated 21-16 in the second after being outscored 18-3. Tommy Devito threw for 155 yards and threw one touchdown and one interception. Joshua Corbin had 40 yards on three carries, and David Sills had two catches for 36 yards.

The Panthers are 6-2 ATS overall and 6-1 ATS in their last seven games against the NFC. In Carolina’s last five games overall, the over is 4-1.  The Giants, meanwhile, have a combined record of 5-1 ATS in their last six games. In their last five games against an NFC opponent, New York is 4-1 ATS.

The Giants have won six of the last ten games played between the two teams. They have also covered the spread in eight of those ten games. It is possible that Giants head coach Brian Daboll elects to play Daniel Jones for a few series. Jones will definitely not play in Week 3.

The Panthers will not play backup QB Andy Dalton either. He suffered a back injury during practice this week. That will leave Matt Corral to take the majority of the snaps.
