Between his 183 appearances in the major leagues, Nick Martinez has started 83 games. He will pitch tonight for the San Diego Padres taking the spot for the injured Joe Musgrove in Game 1 of a two-game interleague series against the hot-hitting Seattle Mariners. Musgrove will be sidelined for at least the next three weeks due to inflammation in his right shoulder.
Martinez promised to be a part of the rotation when he re-signed with the Padres in the offseason.
Martinez moved to the back of the bullpen due to Robert Suarez and Drew Pomeranz’s injuries after making four starts to begin the year. His last appearance saw Martinez throw seven innings of scoreless relief against Atlanta.
Martinez has demonstrated his ability to transition between the rotation and bullpen with ease. He came out of the bullpen against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday and pitched two scoreless innings. That allowed the Padres to put together a late rally for an 8-3 victory. He made a spot start last Wednesday in an 11-1 victory at Colorado, pitching three scoreless innings of one-hit ball. His versatility makes him unique.
Tonight, Martinez (5-4, 3.68 ERA) will attempt to assist the Padres in ending their two-game skid. They are still in the running for a playoff spot in the National League, but they must overtake four opponents to claim the third and final wild-card spot. In six career appearances against Seattle, including four starts, Martinez is 0-3 with a 5.20 ERA.
The Mariners had the day off on Monday following their 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in 10 innings on Sunday in Anaheim, California. The Mariners have won five straight games and 10 of their last 12 to close the gap on Toronto for the third and final wild-card spot in the American League.
Logan Gilbert (9-5, 3.86) is expected to start Tuesday’s game against the Padres. Gilbert has won three of his last four decisions. Last Wednesday he didn’t get a decision in a 6-3 win over Boston, despite only allowing three runs on five hits in six innings. Seattle has won each of Gilbert’s last six starts. He has faced San Diego three times in his career and is 2-1 with a 1.56 ERA. On June 6 in San Diego, he defeated the Padres 4-1, allowing just one run on three hits over the course of seven innings while striking out six.
The Padres have won six of their last nine games on the road and they are 28-27 ATS in road games this season. Seattle has won five straight and eight of its last ten games. The total has gone Over in seven of the last ten games between these two teams. They have combined to average 9.4 runs per game over the last ten meetings. The Over has hit in four of Seattle’s last five home games and in five of San Diego’s last six games overall.
