Time: 9:40 p.m.

Odds: Phillies -111, Padres +101

Total: 8.5

Padres right-handers Joe Musgrove and Yu Darvish are both on the injured list. The Phillies won’t have to face either Padres ace. San Diego had to go with Rich Hill, the 43-year-old left-hander, on Monday in the first game of the series between the two teams. It was an absolute disaster. Hill gave up seven hits and six earned runs before leaving in the second inning. Philadelphia wound up on the right side of a 9-7 victory.

Tonight, the Padres will go with right-hander Pedro Avila who is 0-2 with a 2.67 ERA. This will be just his fourth start of the season. Since being summoned from Triple-A El Paso in late July, Avila, 26, has occasionally pitched very well. As a reliever at first, the rookie posted a 0.95 ERA in 19 innings across six relief appearances. However, he has a 5.56 ERA and a 0-2 record in three starts.

For Philadelphia, it will be right-hander Michael Lorenzen (8-8, 3.73 ERA). On August 9, the Phillies defeated the Washington Nationals 7-0 behind a no-hitter from Lorenzen in his second start for the team. He walked four and struck out five. Lorenzen had an extra three days rest after the no-hitter, but he has struggled in the three starts since.  In those last three starts, Lorenzen has given up 15 runs (13 earned), 24 hits, six walks, and 10 strikeouts in 15 innings. He pitched to a 7.80 ERA, a 2.00 WHIP, and has allowed five home runs.

With the win on Monday, the Phillies ended the Padres’ most recent three-game winning streak. San Diego has not won four straight games all season. Philadelphia has won nine of its last 13 games and two in a row. The Phillies are up in the season series against the Padres, four games to one.

Since 2019, the Padres have not faced Lorenzen. In his 14 career games versus San Diego, he has faced them 12 times as a reliever. He has a 1-2 record, a 5.47 ERA, a 1.329 WHIP, 29 strikeouts, and 10 walks in 26.1innings against the Padres.

Philadelphia has won seven of the last eight games against San Diego. The Phillies are also 4-1 in the last five games against the Padres in San Diego. What bettors should take a good look at is the Over. In the last ten head-to-head meetings, the Over is 8-2. That includes each of the last seven straight. The two teams have combined to average 10.7 runs per game over the last ten meetings. In the last five games, the Phillies and Padres have combined to score at least 10 runs.

The Over is 6-1 in the Phillies’ last ten games and 6-2 in their last eight road games. Interestingly, in the Padres’ last 15 games played on a Tuesday, the Over is 10-5.
