In the first game of a nine-game road trip, the New York Yankees’ ace right-hander Gerrit Cole is scheduled to start against the Chicago White Sox. Although the Yankees will welcome the consistency Cole (10-2, 2.64 ERA) usually provides, it has been especially comforting lately in light of struggles elsewhere in the rotation.

The most recent setback occurred on Sunday when lefty Carlos Rodon, a former member of the White Sox, left his start in the third inning of a 9-7 loss to the visiting Houston Astros due to tightness in his left hamstring. With the loss, the Toronto Blue Jays are now 4.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees for the final American League wild-card spot after the Yankees’ pitching staff gave up four home runs yesterday.

To remain in the postseason race, New York will need dependability across the board. The key will be on the starting pitching rotation. In addition to Domingo German seeking help for his alcohol abuse, Luis Severino is still having difficulties. Cole is the best of the bunch and needs a win tonight to kick off the Yankees’ nine-game road swing.

Cole defeated the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, yielding two runs and four hits over seven innings. In July, Cole went 1-2 with a 2.20 ERA in five starts He pitched a total of 32.2 innings for the month. His opponent tonight comes nowhere near what Cole has accomplished this season. In addition, Cole is 3-1 in four career starts against the White Sox. In a total of 25.1 innings, the Yankees ace has a 3.91 ERA.

Dylan Cease (4-5, 4.61) gets the call for Chicago and he has struggled in 2023. After giving up seven runs on seven hits and three walks in one and a third innings on Wednesday at Texas, Cease was removed from the game. Over his last two starts – both losses – Cease has given up 11 earned runs in just 7.1 innings. In three career starts against the Yankees covering 13.1 innings, Cease is 0-1 with a 9.45 ERA.

The White Sox defeated Cleveland 5-3 on Sunday thanks to a three-run rally in the ninth inning. In the ninth inning, Elvis Andrus notched his third hit of the contest, a two-run single that helped the team rally for the win.

New York is only 1-6 in its last seven games on the road and 1-4 in their last five against the White Sox. However, the Yankees are 5-1 in their last six games played against the Sox in Chicago. The White Sox have taken a dive. They are just 4-11 SU in their last 15 games overall. At home, Chicago has won just three of its last 12 games. The last time the teams played at Guaranteed Rate Field was last May. The Yankees took three of four games.
