The New York Yankees are preparing to travel to Boston for the first time this season at the halfway point of June. A three-game series between the longtime rivals and fellow members of the American League East will start tonight at Fenway Park. They have already met twice in as many weekends, with the Red Sox winning two out of three in New York.

After losing the first two games in extra innings, Boston rallied to defeat Colorado in the series finale on Wednesday. Even though the Red Sox have only won four of their last 12 games, recent trends have been promising.

In 19 of their last 26 games, Red Sox starting pitchers have given up two earned runs or less. Tanner Houck (3-6, 5.23 ERA), who will make his sixth career start against the Yankees, will try to put forth a comparable performance to Garrett Whitlock’s seven innings of two-run ball pitched on Wednesday. In 10 appearances (five starts), Houck has a 2-2 record and a 2.41 ERA in 33.2 innings pitched against the Yankees.

Ten out of Houck’s 12 starts this season have seen him go at least five innings. Only two solo home runs and three total hits were produced by New York last Saturday against Houck in six complete frames. As a result, he took the loss, his third straight.

The Yankees, who have a record of 5-7 over their last twelve games, head to Boston after splitting their two one-run Subway Series games with the Mets. The AL East has been super competitive this season with the Yankees in third place. New York is 9.5 games behind division leader Tampa Bay. The Red Sox are one game below .500 but sit in last place in the division.

Anthony Volpe, who entered this season as the Yankees’ top prospect and is scheduled to play in his 70th MLB game, will make his Fenway Park debut on Friday. The shortstop from New York City describes facing the Red Sox as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tonight, Domingo German (4-3, 3.49) will start for New York after throwing six innings of one-run ball last Saturday, which was the Yankees’ lone victory in the previous Boston series. German is 3-2 with a 3.64 ERA in 13 games (11 starts) against the Red Sox, his first victory over them since August 3, 2019. German has pitched at least six frames in each of his last three appearances. In six of his last seven starts, he has given up two runs or fewer.

The Yankees are 7-2 SU in their last nine games against Boston. They are also 9-3 SU in their last 12 road games. Boston has struggled at home recently, going just 1-5 SU in its last six at Fenway Park.

Both teams have seen the Under go 5-1 in their last six games. In the series played last week, the two teams combined for a total of 14 runs in three games.
