The Miami Marlins are on fire right now, and after defeating the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday for their fifth straight victory, they are currently just outside of a National League wild-card spot. The second game of a three-game series between the teams takes place tonight, giving the Marlins another opportunity to showcase their power play.

Miami will face Los Angeles right-hander Lance Lynn (10-10, 5.81 ERA), who is leading the majors with 37 home runs allowed this season. Miami hit four home runs on Tuesday. Jake Burger, Josh Bell, Bryan De La Cruz, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. all hit long balls in the first game of the series. Miami took a firm lead in the eighth inning thanks to De La Cruz’s 18th homer of the year, a two-run shot. Burger has five home runs in seven games this season versus the Dodgers, and the Marlins’ have twelve during their last five contests.

On Wednesday, the Marlins will start right-hander JT Chargois (1-0, 3.78 ERA). In his only career appearance against the Dodgers, he pitched for the Seattle Mariners in 2021 and allowed one hit while striking out one over 1.1 innings. The Marlins have won Chargois’ only start this season.

The Dodgers (84-53) are in a good position to win the National League West and guarantee themselves at least the second seed in the NL playoffs, but they are facing challenges on several fronts. In addition to dropping four of its previous five games, Los Angeles’ pitching staff is now in doubt.

After his arrest on Sunday on a charge of felony domestic violence, left-hander Julio Urias will be out for an undetermined amount of time for the Dodgers. Thursday was Urias’ scheduled start day, but he did not accompany the team on their road trip. The Dodgers have not yet decided who would start that game. The Dodgers may have to go their Triple-A affiliates to call up an arm or two to finish the season.

On Tuesday, Clayton Kershaw went five innings without striking out a batter. After a shoulder injury cost him six weeks in the middle of the season, he is attempting to avoid more issues. Additionally, third baseman Max Muncy was forced to sit out the Tuesday game after suffering a shoulder injury on Sunday when swinging at a pitch. Austin Barnes, the Dodgers’ catcher, left the game on Tuesday after being struck in the face by a backswing.

Since coming from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline, Lynn has pitched well. He’s 4-1 with a 3.57 ERA in six starts. However, he suffered a loss to the Atlanta Braves last Thursday after allowing three home runs and seven runs overall in 4.1 innings. He has nine appearances (seven starts) versus the Marlins and a lifetime record of 4-2 with a 4.35 ERA.
