Jarred Kelenic lost about a third of the 2023 season with a fractured foot. It was a temper tantrum that cost the Seattle outfielder a ton of playing time this season. Kelenic struck out in the ninth inning on July 19 and kicked a water cooler. The result was a broken foot and a long layover on the injured list.

In his first game back yesterday, Kelenic went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts as the Mariners fell to the Los Angeles Angels 8-5 in 11 innings. The loss moved Seattle (79-65) a half-game behind Texas in the race for the third and final wild-card spot in the American League. Tonight is Game 2 of the three-game series between the Angels and Mariners.

The Mariners lost their fourth game in a row despite Julio Rodriguez hitting his 30th home run with a tying, two-run shot in the 10th inning. Rodriguez added his name to a list that includes Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. and Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez is one of the youngest players in MLB history to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in the same season.

The Angels (68-77) won their third straight game behind a three-home run performance from Logan O’Hoppe and two doubles from Brandon Drury. O’Hoppe also had three RBIs. Shohei Ohtani, the designated hitter, was left out of the starting lineup and missed his eighth straight game due to an oblique strain. Tonight appears to be the night that Ohtani will return. That will be a boost for the Angels.

Tonight, the Mariners will go with rookie right-hander Bryan Woo (2-4, 4.50 ERA). He will go up against Angels left-hander Patrick Sandoval (7-12, 4.31 ERA). In his last two starts, Sandoval has failed to win, including the 10-3 defeat to Baltimore on Wednesday when he surrendered seven runs. Four of those runs were earned. Sandoval gave up seven hits in five innings. In his eight career starts against the Mariners, Sandoval is 0-4 with a 3.18 ERA. On June 10, he pitched five innings against Seattle, giving up five runs on ten hits.

Since his last start on September 4 at Cincinnati, where he lost after giving up five runs on four hits in five innings, Woo has had a few extra days off. In two career starts against the Angels totaling 10.2 innings, Woo is 0–1 with a 3.38 ERA. Woo had three consecutive starts in which he gave up 2 or fewer earned runs prior to that last start against the Reds.

The Angels are 4-1 SU in their last five games, but 1-4 SU in their last five against Seattle. The Angels have struggled in division games. Last night’s win was just its third in the last 15 games against AL West opponents.

The Over is 6-1 in the Mariners’ last seven games and the Over is the trend in this series. The Over has cashed a winning ticket in 13 of the last 20 Angels-Mariners games.
