Giants ace Logan Webb takes the mound tonight as San Francisco starts a three-game weekend series against the Atlanta Braves. The teams just finished a three-game set last week in Atlanta. Last Friday through Sunday, Atlanta defeated San Francisco twice in a row, winning the first two games before the Giants escaped town with a 4-3 victory in the final game of the series.
The middle game of that series was pitched by Webb (9-9, 3.36 ERA), who was relieved after six innings with the Giants leading 5-4. Atlanta won after Eddie Rosario’s two-run home run off Tyler Rogers in the eighth inning. With no decision, Webb is 1-0 in four August starts. Before facing the potent Braves, he had only given up four earned runs in 21.1 innings over his previous three games.
In the victory, Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a home run off the right-hander, and Rosario had three consecutive hits—including a double—off Webb before he hit the game-winning home run off of Rogers. With a 2-0 record and a 2.18 ERA in five starts, the 26-year-old Webb has never suffered a loss to the Braves in his career.
Webb will pitch the first game of a six-game homestand. Since a win on Aug. 7 over the Angels, the Giants have gone 4-10 and have lost series openers to the Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays, Braves, and Philadelphia Phillies.
The Braves will face a different Giants team this week thanks to the addition of Paul DeJong at shortstop. San Francisco acquired the veteran after the Toronto Blue Jays had released him on Monday. DeJong made his team debut on Wednesday and helped the Giants avoid a three-game sweep in Philadelphia with three hits, four RBIs, and the game-winning two-run single in the 10th inning of an 8-6 victory. DeJong went 3-for-44 as a Blue Jay.
The pitcher the Giants face in the first game of the series won’t be anything new. When the Braves won 4-0 to start the series last week, right-hander Spencer Strider (14-4, 3.57) held San Francisco to just one hit in seven innings of scoreless ball. In his last two starts, totaling 14 innings, Strider hasn’t given up a run while striking out 16 hitters and allowing just four hits.
The Giants have lost their last six series. The Braves have won their last four. They just beat the Mets in the last two games of their three-game series before an off day yesterday. In three games against the Mets, Marcell Ozuna, who had three hits in the game Webb pitched in Atlanta last week, went 8-for-11 with four home runs and seven RBIs.
The Giants are just 4-10 SU in their last 14 games. They are 5-10 SU in their last 15 against a National League opponent. The Braves continue to lead the majors in scoring averaging 5.78 runs per game.
