It’s the perfect late-season MLB series. The New York Yankees and their rival, the Boston Red Sox, meet in a three-game series that will likely decide which team makes the postseason and which one goes home for the season. The Yankees definitely have the tougher remaining schedule. After the three-game set with Boston, New York goes to Toronto for three games and then ends the season at home with AL East leader Tampa Bay.

Currently, Boston holds the first wild card spot and the Yankees own the second. Toronto is a game behind New York. To start the series, the Yankees will go with Gerrit Cole who is 15-8 with a 3.03 ERA this season. He is still the ace of the Yankees staff, but his last start was absolutely horrendous. In 5.2 innings, Cole gave up seven earned runs in an 11-1 loss to Cleveland. That start aside, the Yankees have won five of Cole’s last seven starts.

The Yankees enjoyed a day off yesterday after sweeping Texas in three games. New York has won seven of its last ten games and averaged over six runs in each of those seven wins. They managed just two runs per game in the three losses.

New York has two 30-plus home run hitters in the lineup in Aaron Judge (36) and Giancarlo Stanton (31). Gary Sanchez isn’t all that far behind with 23 dingers. They will all go up against Boston’s Nathan Eovaldi. With Chris Sale missing most of the 2021 season, Eovaldi has stepped up. He is only 10-8 this season with a 3.52 ERA, but he gives the Red Sox a chance to win every time he pitches. In fact, Boston has won his last six straight starts in a row.

What Eovaldi doesn’t do is pitch deep into games. He rarely goes past the sixth inning which is why he was not involved in the decision in any of those six straight wins. In those six starts, Eovaldi has allowed just nine earned runs across 35.2 innings. With the Boston lineup scoring eight runs in four of those games, the Red Sox were able to win. Those four games also saw the total go Over.

Eovaldi has pitched against the Yankees five times this season. The Red Sox are 2-3 in those five starts. Eovaldi has pitched very well against New York giving the Red Sox a chance to win in all five games. He has allowed just seven earned runs in 31.1 innings against the Yankees.

New York is 1-2 in games Cole has started against Boston. He allowed three home runs in one of those starts. Of course, the Yankees lost and the total went Over in that game. Tonight’s total is 9. The total has gone Under in six of the Yankees last nine games. The Over has hit in six of the last eight games for Boston.
