Sun Belt Conference Best Bet: UL-Lafayette at Arkansas State

Oct 21, 2013

Temperatures at Liberty Bank Stadium will be in the low 50s for this exciting Sun Belt Conference clash between the Ragin’ Cajuns and Red Wolves.  UL-Lafayette starting quarterback Terrance Broadway leads an attack that is averaging 38.5 points per game on 5.0 yards per rush play, 8.4 yards per pass attempt and 440 total yards (6.2 yards per play; 11.4 yards per point).

UL-Lafayette Offense:

  • 0.1 yards per rush play better than average
  • 1.1 yards per pass attempt better than average
  • 0.2 yards per play better than average
  • 2.0 yards per point better than average

While UL-Lafayette possesses an explosive passing game behind quarterback Terrance Broadway (ranks third in the conference in quarterback efficiency), the Cajuns utilized its ground game to defeat Western Kentucky last week.  In fact, UL-Lafayette garnered 254 rushing yards and three touchdowns behind star running back Alonzo Harris, who led the team with 115 rushing yards against the Hilltoppers.

Not to be outdone, Arkansas State is coming off an impressive 48-24 win over Idaho wherein senior quarterback Adam Kennedy had a career-high 375 passing yards and four touchdowns.  The Utah State transfer ranks third in passing yards (Sun Belt)  and was recently named the conference offensive player of the week.

Arkansas State Offense:

  • 0.3 yards per rush play worse than average
  • 0.1 yards per pass attempt better than average
  • 0.3 yards per play worse than average
  • 1.7 yards per point worse than average

The statistics above are misleading as the Red Wolves still boast impressive numbers on the offensive side of the ball: 211 rushing yards per game at 5.0 yards per carry; 268 passing yards per game at 7.8 yards per pass attempt (68.1% completion rate); and 480 total yards.  Moreover, Arkansas State is a perfect 3-0 at home this season where the Red Wolves are averaging 50.3 points per game on 6.4 yards per rush play, 10.6 yards per pass attempt and 592 total yards (7.9 yards per play; 11.8 yards per point).

Pro Edge Sports has confirmed that a respected betting group has made an early move on Arkansas State, which is not surprising for two key reasons: (1) the Red Wolves have one of the best third-down conversion rates in the country (48%); and (2) the Red Wolves have turned the ball over just six times this season.  While bettors may expect a high-scoring affair, we should note that the ‘under’ is 22-7-2 in Arkansas State’s last 31 home games against teams with a winning record.
