Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Becomes Youngest Player With a 20-Rebound Triple-Double

Jan 29, 2020

Not even big men get 20-rebound triple-doubles in the NBA often. Last Monday, Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got one. It was remarkable because of the position he plays.

The 21-year-old made history by becoming the second guard in the last 30 years to record a 20-point, 20-rebound triple-double. He joined former Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook. ESPN Stats & Info revealed that Gilgeous-Alexander also surpassed NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’ Neal as the youngest player in NBA history with a 20-rebound triple-double.

Gilgeous-Alexander played extremely well for the Thunder in their 117-104 road win against the Timberwolves last Monday. He finished the game with 20 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists in 36 minutes. The talented point guard was 8-for-12 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. The Thunder outscored their opponent by 23 points when he was on the court.

Playing with Chris Paul has helped Gilgeous-Alexander reach new heights. The Thunder acquired him in the trade that sent Paul George to the Clippers and he is becoming a star.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 19.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals in 35.4 minutes over 40 games. He is making 46.8 percent of his shots from the field and 34.4 percent from 3-point range. The Thunder were not expected to compete this season after losing Russell Westbrook and Paul George but breakout performances like the ones he’s having have helped OKC perform well.

The Thunder are currently 23-18, seventh in the crowded Western Conference. Gilgeous-Alexander deserves consideration for the Most Improved Player of the Year award. He currently ranks in the top three in points, rebounds, assists and steals with the Thunder.
