Utah State made an excellent hire in new head coach Blake Anderson, who went 51-37 with six bowl appearances in seven seasons at Arkansas State. Anderson brought his starting quarterback, Logan Bonner, and leading wide receiver Brandon Bowling with him from Arkansas State, and further added talent via the transfer portal. Oregon State transfer Calvin Tyler Jr. leads the team in rushing yards with 477 at 5.0 yards per carry (4 TDs).

Bonner’s familiarity with Anderson’s offensive schemes has paid immediate dividends as he’s averaging 13.69 passing yards per completion (23rd in the nation) and 8.1 yards per pass attempt (43rd). The Aggies’ defense is anchored by one of the conference’s best linebacking corps consisting of six of last year’s top seven tacklers, and Anderson added former Fresno State and Arkansas State linebacker Justin Rice, who leads the team in tackles (52) and interceptions (3).

Utah State special teams coordinator Nick Paremski continues to devise ways to utilize senior wide receiver Savon Scarver.  Scarver is one of the most dynamic kick returners in the nation as evidenced by the fact that he is currently ranked 12th in the FBS in kickoff returns (28.0).

With upset road wins over both Washington State (26-23; 18-point underdog) and Air Force (49-45; 9-point underdog), Utah State is one of the most improved teams in college football. In contrast, Colorado State commenced the 2021 campaign with back-to-back upset home losses to South Dakota State and Vanderbilt. While the Rams appear to have turned the corner with consecutive wins over San Jose State and New Mexico, that perception is undermined by the fact that those victories came against opponents with a combined record of 6-9.

From a technical standpoint, Utah State is a profitable 20-8-1 ATS under the Friday night lights, whereas the Rams have failed to cover the spread in ten of their last 12 Friday night affairs. Grab the points with Utah State as Oskeim’s Free Pick Winner for Friday, October 22.
