Football season is back, which means it’s time to place your bets!
That’s right, if you’re a football fan like millions of others in the United States, betting on NFL games is the best way to get more involved in the season and even make some big bucks.
But what kind of NFL bets are there to choose from, and which one is right for you? Let’s take a close look at the different types of football bets.
Point Spreads
Point spreads, also known as straight bets, is the most popular type of NFL bet.
Before kickoff, each game will have a unique point spread based on the likelihood of one team beating the other, and how much of a point difference there will be.
For example, in a game with two unevenly matched teams, such as the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins, you’ll see a big point spread like -21.5. This means that if you place your bet on the dolphins, you can win that bet as long as the Dolphins don’t lose by more than 21 points.
This type of bet is great for beginners because of how straightforward it is.
Over/Under
With over/under bets, you don’t have to choose which team wins the game. You only have to determine if the score will be over or under a specified number.
For example, the over/under for a game involving two high-scoring teams might be 50. If you think the score will be higher than that, you’d place your bet on over.
You can also place over/under bets on specific things within a game, such as whether a team will get over/under two interceptions.
Over/under bets are good for if you know a game will have a super low or high score, but you’re unsure of who will win.
Money Lines
Money line bets allow you to choose a team to win without taking the point spread into consideration. However, you will have to wager more and win less if you choose a favored team.
For example, a money line bet might look like this: New Orleans Saints -140 / Carolina Panthers +160. This means if you want to bet on the favored Saints, you’d have to bet $14 to win $10. If you bet on the underdog Panthers, You only would bet $10 to win $14.
Money line bets are great for people who feel super confident about which team will win, but aren’t confident about the line spread. For example, if a team’s best player is injured, it might be a good idea to place a money line bet against that team winning.
Parlays
A Parlay involves betting on more than one team. These bets are more difficult to win, but pay out a lot more.
For example, for a two-team parlay you’de have to pick two teams to win, and both of those teams would need to win (including the point spread) in order for you to win the bet.
Parlays are a great type of NFL bet for people who are more experienced and willing to risk more for a greater reward.
