The New York Yankees (8-4) have a 16-3 record against the Minnesota Twins (8-4) in their last 19 meetings. In the opening game of a four-game series against the Twins tonight in the Bronx, the Yankees will try to maintain their current dominance.

Last Saturday against the Houston Astros, Joe Ryan allowed a grand slam. Ryan finished the game allowing only those four earned runs and striking out 10 batters in six innings, earning the victory in Minnesota’s 9-6 win.

Prior to his start against the Yankees on Thursday, Ryan had a 3.75 ERA and 0.75 WHIP. After winning in his final four starts in 2022 and his first two starts this year, Minnesota is undefeated in his last six starts. This will be the  right-hander’s first career start against New York.

Following up on his sensational MLB debut, Jhony Brito had another impressive performance last Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees defeated their division rivals 4-1 thanks in large part to Brito, who gave up just three hits and one earned run in five innings.

The 25-year-old rookie has made two starts in the major leagues and is currently 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA and 0.80 WHIP. Due to injuries to Luis Severino, Carlos Rodon, and Frankie Montas, a spot in the starting rotation became available. Brito is making a great case for himself on why he should continue to pitch in the rotation even after the Yankees staff returns to full health.

Due to their excellent pitching, the Twins are off to an 8-4 start this season, ranking second in the majors with a 2.50 team ERA. Through 12 games, Minnesota’s offense has been much less effective, averaging just 3.92 runs.

Through his first two starts, Ryan has received excellent run support. The Twins scored seven runs against the Kansas City Royals and nine runs against Houston. To pull off an upset in this game, Minnesota will need a strong start from Ryan.

Despite the injuries to the pitching staff, the Yankees’ team ERA of 2.72 is third best in the majors. That ranks behind only the Twins and the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees have won four of their last five games while giving up three runs or fewer in each of those contests.

With at least four runs scored in six of the team’s last seven games and an average of 5.14 runs in those games, New York has also been hitting the ball well. That, and the fact that Brito has pitched well thus far, is why the Yankees are a home favorite tonight.

Additionally, New York has won 10 of its last 11 games against Minnesota at home. In the last three games between the Yankees and Twins the Over is 3-0. The Under has cashed in 12 of the Yankees last 18 games. The Under is also 4-2 in Minnesota’s last six games. Through its first six away games in 2023, Minnesota is 4-2.
