Game: Los Angeles Dodgers @ Colorado Rockies
Time: 8:40 p.m.
Odds: Dodgers -205, Rockies +175
Total: 12
In 2014, the Houston Astros released J.D. Martinez, who wasn’t sure he would ever play in the majors. On Tuesday night, he hit his 300th career home run for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Colorado Rockies. If he played more games at Coors Field, Martinez could be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Martinez will have a chance to improve his .421 average and five home runs in 13 career games at Colorado when the Dodgers finish a three-game series in the Mile High City tonight. Colorado won 9-8 Wednesday night despite 13 combined walks, eight by Rockies pitchers. In the series finale, right-handed rookie Emmet Sheehan (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will face veteran Chase Anderson (0-2, 5.79) of Colorado.
Martinez had an MVP-worthy 2018 when he helped Boston win the World Series after being cut by Houston. Martinez joined a strong Dodgers lineup after hitting .330 with 43 home runs, 130 RBIs, and 111 runs. He did strike out with the bases loaded in the eighth inning on Wednesday night, missing a chance to be a hero once again.
Sheehan will start his third MLB game and first against Colorado. He pitched six no-hit innings in his major league debut against the San Francisco Giants on June 16 and won his first game last Friday against Houston. He struck out four and walked two in six innings, allowing two runs and three hits.
In Saturday’s 25-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, Anderson gave up three straight home runs. The Yankees hit three consecutive home runs against Anderson on Sept. 17, 2020, the last time a pitcher did it. Anderson allowed nine runs in 2.2 innings in the loss to the Angels.
Anderson will start his 13th game against the Dodgers. He last faced them on April 20, 2019, when he was with the Milwaukee Brewers. He is 2-4 with a 4.62 ERA against LA in his career.
The Dodgers are 5-2 SU in their last seven games. They have won four of the last five against Colorado. The Rockies have been very inconsistent this season. They are now 3-10 SU in their last 13 games. Colorado is also just 2-17 SU in its last 19 games against an NL opponent. The Rockies have won just three of their last 19 games in the NL West Division.
Colorado is once again scoring well at home. The Rockies are 19th in MLB in scoring, averaging 4.37 runs per game. They score 5.03 per game at home and just 3.74 on the road. That is typical of games at Coors Field. Tonight’s total opened at 12.5 but ticked down a half-point to 12. That matches last night’s total, which the teams surpassed in Colorado’s 9-8 victory.
Interestingly, six of the last eight Dodgers-Rockies games have gone Under, including four of the last five played at Coors Field.
