The Boston Red Sox are pleased with Chris Sale’s recent performances. The left-hander will now have the chance to snap the team’s three-game losing streak tonight when he takes the mound against the Cincinnati Reds.

Injuries have limited Sale, who was an All-Star every year from 2012 to 2018, to 48.1 innings over the last three seasons, but he has returned to form over his last five starts. In those five starts, he went 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA, 35 strikeouts, and only four walks in 32.1 innings. In his most recent start, Sale pitched five innings and allowed just one earned run in a 7-2 win over Arizona last Friday.

After his first three starts of the season, Sale (5-2, 4.72 ERA) had an 11.25 ERA and had given up 25 baserunners in 12 innings. The turning point, according to Red Sox manager Alex Cora, occurred after Sale adjusted his delivery prior to his fifth start of the season against the Baltimore Orioles on April 24. Tonight will be Sale’s first-ever start against Cincinnati.

The Reds have won the first two games of the three-game series and are on a five-game winning streak. Cincinnati will start Hunter Greene (1-4, 4.18 ERA). The 23-year-old right-hander was outstanding in his most recent start. He didn’t allow a run in six innings in their 9-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday. Greene walked two and struck out 11.

One year ago today, Greene made his only career start against the Red Sox. He gave up four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings as Boston won 7-1. In the first three innings of that game, Greene struck out seven batters and did not allow a run, but the Red Sox chased him out of the game by scoring four runs in the fourth inning.

The Reds overcame a 3-1 deficit to win 5-4 on Wednesday after holding on to defeat the Red Sox 9-8 on Tuesday. Cincinnati has now won six of its last seven games on the road. The Reds are just 5-14 SU in the last 19 games against the Red Sox.

Boston has only won twice in its last nine games. They were swept by the Angels in three games last week before winning two of three against Arizona over the weekend.

The Reds have the fifth-highest cover percentage in MLB. Cincy is 33-22 (60%) ATS so far this season. The Reds are 17-10 ATS in road games this season. Cincinnati has had a lot of success against left-handed pitchers too. The Reds are 13-6 against southpaws this season.

Four of the last five Reds games have gone Over the total. Last night, the teams combined for nine runs, but the total closed at 10.5. Both teams trend Over. Boston has the second-highest Over percentage (60.4%, 32-21-2) in the majors. The Reds are sixth (56.4%, 31-24).
