Game: Los Angeles Angels @ New York Yankees
Time: 7:05 p.m. ET
Odds: Angels +120, Yankees -130
Total: 8.5
Both the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees were off to great starts in 2022. Recently though, both teams have experienced some difficulties. For the Angels, they have lost five straight after dropping a four-game series over the weekend to Toronto. Three of the four games were by one run.
For the Yankees, they only have 15 total losses on the season but five of those have come in the last 15 games. Injuries are starting to play a factor in New York’s long-term success. Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson will both be out tonight as both are on the 10-day injured list. Relief pitchers Aroldis Chapman and Jonathan Loaisiga are both on the 15-day injured list.
Despite the injuries, the Yankees have managed to win four of their last six games. Aaron Judge continues to lead the majors in home runs with 18. He also has 37 RBIs and is batting .309. New York is eighth in MLB in runs per game averaging 4.58. The Yankees cooled off a bit in their four-game weekend series with Tampa Bay. The Rays held New York to five total runs over the final three games of the series. The Yankees split the series.
Noah Syndergaard gets the start for the Angels. He is not the dominant pitcher he was before Tommy John surgery, but he is still very good. Syndergaard is 4-2 with a 3.08 ERA. He won his last start against Texas pitching eight innings and allowing just one earned run.
The Yankees will counter with left-hander Jordan Montgomery. So far, Montgomery has pitched well. He’s got a 3.30 ERA, but he has yet to win a game this season. Montgomery also has not received the kind of run support some of his fellow Yankee pitchers have received. In nine starts so far this season, the Yankees have won just three times with Montgomery as the starter.
Montgomery will be pitching in the comforts of home. New York has done well at home this season. The Yankees are 14-4 SU in their last 18 home games. They have also done well against the Angels at home winning 14 of the last 20 against L.A. at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have also won 13 of the last 20 against the Angels overall.
While the Under is 4-1 in the Yankees’ last five games, four of the last six games played between the Angels and Yankees have gone Over. With Judge and Angels like Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout on the field, there is the potential for a lot of runs. Also, consider that the Angels bullpen has an ERA of 5.81 over the last seven games. While the Yankees rank eighth in runs per game, the Angels are even better ranking fourth with an average of 4.80 runs a game.
This is the first of two series that the Angels and Yankees will play this season. They meet again in late August in Los Angeles.
