Game: Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys
Time: 8:15 p.m. ET
Odds: Eagles +3.5, Cowboys -3.5
Total: 51.5
History may be on the side of the Philadelphia Eagles in tonight’s Monday night matchup with NFC East Division rival Dallas. You see, the Eagles are 4-1 in their last five Monday night games. On the other end, the Cowboys somehow have managed to lose seven straight primetime games. That includes this year’s season opener, a 31-29 defeat at the hands of the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
If not for a Greg Zuerlein 56-yard field goal in Week 2, Dallas could easily be 0-2 right now. Zuerlein did hit that game-winner and Dallas beat the Chargers 20-17. The Cowboys ran the ball effectively gaining 198 yards on 31 carries. QB Dak Prescott was an efficient 23-of-27 for 237 yards passing and the Dallas defense sacked Chargers QB Justin Herbert twice and picked him off twice.
Now, Dallas will attempt to do the same to Philadelphia QB Jalen Hurts. The Eagles quarterback was outstanding in a season-opening win over Atlanta where he threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Last week, Hurts struggled and wound up 12-of-23 for 190 yards. Philly lost to San Francisco 17-11.
Philadelphia has lost the last three times it has played in Dallas. The Eagles’ last win against the Cowboys on the road was in 2017 when Philly won 37-9. The Eagles have won two of the last three in this series though both of those wins were in Philadelphia. Those two Eagles wins are actually the only two in the last seven games in the series.
In addition to their 2-5 straight-up record against Dallas, Philadelphia is also just 2-5 against the spread in those seven games. When the game has been played in Dallas, the Eagles are just 1-4 ATS.
With Prescott back in the lineup for Dallas – he missed most of last season with an ankle injury – the Cowboys’ offense has the ability to put up big numbers at any time. That may be the reason for the high total (51.5) for tonight’s game. That happens to be the highest total for a Dallas-Philadelphia game since 2015. In the last ten Cowboys-Eagles games, seven have finished with a total of Under 52. Two of those games had a total of exactly 52 and last year’s finale resulted in a total of 54 points (37-17).
Dallas does trend toward the Over. Six of the last nine Cowboys games have seen the total go Over. That’s not the case for the Eagles. In Philadelphia’s last nine games, including last week’s loss to San Francisco, the total has gone Under nine times. This Cowboys-Eagles series also trends Under. Six of the last nine Dallas-Philadelphia games have resulted in the Under.
The last time a Cowboys-Eagles game had a posted total higher than 52 was in 2015. In that game, the Eagles were favored by five points and the total was 55. Dallas won the game 20-10, which was one of several low-scoring games between these two teams in recent history.
