San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies (-141)
San Diego arrives in town off a double-header in Cincinnati Thursday and now face one of the most prolific offenses in baseball. Colorado is batting .296 with a .345 on base percentage this season (5.5 runs per game), including hitting .353 with a .401 on base percentage at home (7.7 runs per game) and .303 with a .350 on base percentage at night (5.7 runs per game). San Diego hands the ball to southpaw Eric Stults, who is 2-3 with a 5.03 ERA and 1.65 WHIP this season, including going 0-3 with a 6.62 ERA and 1.92 WHIP on the road and 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA and 1.95 WHIP over his last three starts. Stults also struggled on the road last season where he garnered a pedestrian 4.77 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in eighteen starts.
The issue that continues to limit the Padres is an anemic offense that is batting .221 with a .273 on base percentage in 2014 (3.0 runs per game). Even more concerning is the fact that San Diego is batting .196 with a .247 on base percentage on the road (2.4 runs per game) and .211 with a .264 on base percentage versus division opponents (2.6 runs per game). The Padres must now face Colorado left-hander Jorge De La Rosa, who toes the rubber in excellent form with a 2.84 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over his last three outings. De La Rosa has also limited the Padres to two earned runs or less in each of his last three appearances against San Diego.
The technical analysis favoring De La Rosa is the most compelling aspect of this selection:
- De La Rosa is 34-10 (+21.5 units) at home versus teams who strike out seven or more times per game;
- De La Rosa is 16-0 (+17.9) following a loss over the last two seasons;
- De La Rosa is 15-2 (+12.2 units) at home over the last two seasons;
- De La Rosa is 43-15 (+21.6 units) as a home favorite in his career;
- De La Rosa is 13-1 (+12.0 units) at home with a total between 8.5 and 10 runs
De La Rosa is also supported by a surging Colorado bullpen that owns a 2.77 ERA and 1.23 WHIP versus division opponents and a 1.59 ERA and 0.76 WHIP over the last seven games. The other problem facing San Diego is the fact that Eric Stults has always at Coords Field. In fact, in five career starts in Colorado, Stults has yielded a combined sixteen earned runs on 34 hits in just 23 2/3-innings of work. With Colorado standing at 11-1 (+9.6 units) in home night games, 15-4 (+9.7 units) at home after losing three of its last four games, 34-12 (+16.9 units) as home favorites of -175 or less and 10-0 (+10.1 units) at home with a total between 10 and 10.5 runs, we like Colorado to take the opening game of this series.
Other MLB Games Worthy of Consideration:
- New York Yankees (-131) over Pittsburgh Pirates
- Los Angeles Angels (-135) over Tampa Bay Rays
- Texas Rangers (-161) over Toronto Blue Jays
- New York/Washington UNDER 7 runs
- Toronto/Texas UNDER 8.5 runs
- Atlanta/St. Louis UNDER 7 runs
