Oskeim Sports previews Wednesday’s college basketball game between the Clemson Tigers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.  Oskeim recommends grabbing the points with the Yellow Jackets.

Investments don’t get much more contrarian than this one as Clemson arrives off consecutive double-digit wins, including a 64-37 destruction of Wake Forest, whereas the Yellow Jackets are immersed in a three-game losing streak.

However, Georgia Tech has been performing well in the betting marketplace, covering the point spread in three of its last four games. More importantly, the Yellow Jackets faced three top-25 teams in a row before returning home tonight to take on an unranked opponent in Clemson.

The Yellow Jackets rely upon a suffocating defense that is allowing 64.0 points per game to teams that would combine to average 74.5 points per game against a mediocre stop unit. Indeed, Georgia Tech is ranked 10th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (38.8) and 7th in three-point field goal percentage defense (27.7).

I also like the fact that the Yellow Jackets are 18th nationally in blocked shots per game (5.0) and don’t yield many second-chance opportunities (allowing fewer than 9.0 offensive rebounds per game).

Georgia Tech has faced three of the nation’s top 10 teams in offensive efficiency as ranked by KenPom.com – Tennessee (2), Duke (4) and Virginia Tech (7) – and held them to an average of 61.3 points. All three teams posted their lowest efficiency rating of the season against the Yellow Jackets.

North Carolina is No. 11, and the Yellow Jackets held the Tar Heels to their fourth-lowest rating of the season. Florida State is No. 37 and was held to its second-lowest rating this season on Saturday.

Georgia Tech head coach Josh Pastner is utilizing his deep bench this season and Tech reserves are outscoring their opponents 22.3 to 16.6 per game. Finally, Clemson falls into a negative 10-30 ATS road letdown system, while the Yellow Jackets fall into a profitable 112-62 ATS contrarian situation that invests on certain underdogs off a double-digit loss.

Georgia Tech is 39-18 ATS in its last 57 games versus .601 or greater opposition, 28-13 ATS in its previous 41 home games, 10-4 ATS in its last fourteen conference tilts and 11-2 ATS in its last thirteen games following a loss.
